Activities for the Elderly - Technology!

Silver Surfers:  It's inescapable nowadays that computers are everywhere. Using the Internet and computers have become a normal part of life and as such, many seniors have found that they have to adapt to this new way of communication. As such, there is an organization called the Silver Surfers. This organization teaches senior citizens how to surf the Internet, and how to use acquire basic computer skills. Not only can seniors learn how to send e-mails to their friends and family members, but they can also learn common computer programs, so that they can be useful in our computer-based world. Technology really is a fantastic way of keeping in touch with friends and families, go on, if you haven't tried it, then do it!

  1. There's this awesome program by my house where I take my grandmother and she learns to use the computer and use her cell phone. It's so good for them! The place has a computer for each of the students (seniors) and they teach them how to navigate through it and the web. Then the seniors bring in their own cell phones and they are taught how to use them. I had to buy her a phone, but it was too expensive for what she was using it. I was thinking about switching it to the SVC phone, but am not sure if $7 really means $7. Any tips? I know the phone has good features, but is it a good phone?

  2. Hi Christy,

Thanks for the comment. Does this program have a website? Would love to see what they do and how it is setup. I can't help you regarding your phone, best thing would be to google it and see if there are any reviews. In my experience most of our seniors want a cell phone only for calls and maybe texts so I would go for one that is easy to use rather than full of functions.
